The Second Edition of The Encyclopedia of Country Music was released last week, offering 1200 new and updated entries.
The encyclopedia features new entries on artists who have influenced country music in the years since the original 1998 printing, including Kenny Chesney, the Dixie Chicks, Miranda Lambert, Brad Paisley, Rascal Flatts, Blake Shelton, Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban and more.
Other new entries focus on some of the past decade’s most important studio musicians, songwriters and executives. Additionally, the revised edition explores current industry trends such as the digital revolution, the shifting politics of country music, and the impact of American Idol. Other essays cover the literature of country music, the importance of Nashville as a music center, and the colorful stage costumes that have long been a staple of the genre.
The encyclopedia was edited by Paul Kingsbury, editor of the first edition of The Encyclopedia of Country Music, and the Hall’s editor Michael McCall, and Sr. Historian John W. Rumble.
Upon its first publication, The Encyclopedia of Country Music became a reference classic and the definitive source on the genre.
The new 640-page volume includes a foreword by Hall of Fame inductee Vince Gill. From Oxford University Press and the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum, the book retails for $65.00.
