Facebook’s new Trending section brings popular news directly to Facebook users.

Users of Facebook may notice their homepages have a new feature. The social media giant has revealed Trending, a new product designed to reveal relevant and popular conversations in order to help users discover content. The product launched yesterday (Jan. 16). On the right side of a user’s news feed, users will see a list of topics that are currently popular in Facebook conversations.  The Trending section is currently being rolled out in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, India and Australia.

The personalized list includes the most mentioned words, news and phrases of the moment, along with brief explanations of why each is spiking in popularity. A click-through leads to a page of mentions by friends, Pages and public posts.

According to Facebook’s news blog, “Topics are personalized based on things you’re interested in and what is trending across Facebook overall.”
